DIY Ripped Jeans

I have been wanting to try and create this look for a while, but to be honest...I was afraid to wreck my jeans. So when my favorite jeans started to rip, I knew it was fate.

I watched this how-to video on youtube; Here's how I did it with what is needed to complete this look:
  1. Sharp Scissors
  2. Needle
  3. Tweezers
To sum up the video: You cut slits in your jeans then use the needle to get it started. Once you get it started you use the tweezers to pull out the blue thread leaving behind the white. Sounds and looks easy enough, right?

Here is what I discovered in the process:

1)You need patience. The blue thread that you pull out doesn't always come out that easy, but once you get it started, it isn't that bad. I also discovered that in the spots that were more worn then others, the white thread broke easily. But no need to worry, I fixed this problem with patches (we will get to that later).

2)How far apart you make the slits also matters. I found that the closer together the slits, the easier it was to pull the blue thread.

Fixing My Mistakes

1) First I fixed my original rip which I wasn't able to "rip" how I wanted with pre-cut patches of material I purchased from JoAnns Crafts for round $4.00. I also purchased demin patches for around $2.00. Although I had to cut them to the size I wanted, it was very easy. I sewed these on, but "no sew" tape would work just as well. I also added a few patches to the other leg so they would blend well.

2) Also, I didn't want to show my skin, so I put the material that I used for the patch on the inside of my pants. This way, when you look through the rips, you'll only see that material.

Overall, it was a great experience. I loved being able to create an original pair of jeans...especially when people asked me where I bought them!

Here is a picture of the finished product. I will wear them for a look of day next week!
