How to Dress for a Pear Shaped Body Type

Last week we talked about how to add the illusion of curves; this week we will talk about how to dress for a pear shaped body type. A pear shape is defined as having narrow shoulders with your bust and waistline being smaller and petite. You tend to have more voluptuous hips, bottom and thighs. A lot of women tend to have difficulty finding pants that fit properly, the waist ends up being too big, while fitting in the hips and butt. The best advice that most fashion experts will give you is... find a good taylor. A good taylor can take the frustration out of trying to find the perfect fit. Here are some more tips to help with the challenge of finding apparel that balances the upper portion with the bottom. The goal is to visually slim your bottom half and play up your top.
  • Knee-length a-line skirts with flared hems tend to narrow the hips of the pear shape. Don't wear super full or clingy skirts.
  • Add volume to your top half not only to draw the eye up, but to also help balance you out. Look for shirts with ruffles, scoop-necks or boat necks, cap sleaves, and detailed tops. Becareful to not go over board with the volumn on your top half ...you don't want to look sloppy.
